My Polar Research: Overview

My current research revolves around modelling snow and ice in Arctic systems, their change and impacts for wildlife and society.

Currently, I am lead author on the following papers in preparation:

  1. A new sea ice model to understand the effects of snow variability on sea ice growth.
  2. Changes of snow and sea ice concentration over 1980-2025, and the impacts on ringed seal pupping lair habitat.
  3. A new soil model that is specifically developed to understand the soil temperature evolution throughout the year, and the freeze-thawing of permafrost and the soil’s active layer in Arctic regions. This model will have applications for wildlife. For example, lemmings or Picas live in rock layers ("talus") under the snow. Snow acts as an insulator from the cold outside temperatures in Winter. Thinner snow cover in a warming climate, leads to colder habitat for these animals: one too cold for them to survive freezing Winter. This model will be able to model such habitat.

I have an undergraduate in Computer Science and Environmental Science, and am pursuing a Masters in Atmospheric and Climate Science at ETH, Zurich.
